Trees, we learn while reading, are social beings, part of vast, interconnected communities. “The Overstory,” first published in 2018, is a deeply-affecting, perception-altering novel about trees and the suffering humans who learn to listen to their ancient, silent messages. It is a book that makes me want to remember what I had forgotten: the wordless understanding I had about trees and how as a child I listened to them, knowing they were alive and communicating. Joseph Conrad settled in England in 1894, the year before he published his first novel. He was hired to take a steamship into Africa, and according to Conrad, the experience of seeing firsthand the horrors of colonial rule left him a changed man. But here Martyn Rady shows the reasons for the family's incredible endurance, driven by the belief that they were destined to rule the world as defenders of the Roman Catholic Church, guarantors of peace and patrons of learning. With its seemingly disorganized mass of large and small territories, its tangle of laws and privileges and its medley of languages, the Habsburg Empire has always appeared haphazard and incomplete. The family continued to dominate Central Europe until the catastrophe of the First World War. Then, in just a few decades, their possessions rapidly expanded to take in a large part of Europe stretching from Hungary to Spain, and from the Far East to the New World. From modest origins, the Habsburgs grew in power to gain control of the Holy Roman Empire in the fifteenth century. ![]() In The Habsburgs, Martyn Rady tells the epic story of a dynasty and the world it built - and then lost - over nearly a millennium. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The secret life of james thurber![]() ![]() In the Movie similar to the book Walter spends a large portion of his time daydreaming looking for a more exciting life, however as the movie progresses Walter start to take on more risk and challenges while unknowingly beginning to live the life he so desperately desired. Is he the fabled Kwisatz Haderach, able to span time – ‘who can be many places at once’? Betrayed and exiled into the waterless deserts of Arrakis, his destiny will not only be fulfilled, but the future of humankind decided, and from the dunes will arise a saviour – Muad’Dib – both terrible and beautiful in his absolute power. However, despite the grand scale of Herbert’s fully formed universe, at its heart Dune is the story of a single boy, Paul Atreides, who finds himself caught in the web of a myth, centuries in the making. Humanity has resorted to a delicately balanced feudal system of governance, each aristocratic family struggling for survival, competing for control of a decadent empire. It is a universe of ‘traps within traps’, of human computers, secretive witch-cults and fanatic warriors, all with their own intricate histories and intentions. After the novel’s publication in 1965, it won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, going on to sell over 12 million copies, and spawning five sequels, as well as multiple board games, computer games, television series and feature films. The far-future universe created by Herbert is nothing short of a phenomenon. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Fortunate Beasts by Otava Heikkilä![]() ![]() Yes, marriage is a contract between people, but it also one with the community. No one can deny them, or pretend they aren’t there.Īnd even though Lucardo does this because of class and supernatural/human differences, it was so true to queer experiences. Of course, Lucardo flamboyantly decides they should get married and pronounces it before the court. Of course, Lucardo rushes to find Ed as soon as possible. Heikkilä created what is perhaps one of my favorite single panels in all of comics, where Lucardo, after a fight with his father, says, “In summary, father, you’re still an asshole, apology denied, leave me to eat my fucking cake.” All while he has a shit-eating grin on his face with the saddest, heartbroken eyes. They are absolutely cute one second, and then the next, they are completely in over their heads. The pull and tug of Ed and Lucardo’s relationship is just the best. ![]() ![]() Letters for Lucardo: Fortunate Beasts Vol 2 by Otava Heikkilä ![]() |
